DEAR ICHIRO
When Ichiro Suzuki was inducted as the first Japanese-born player enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and the Mariners retired his iconic No. 51, we knew the moment deserved more than a traditional tribute.
Ichiro's impact reaches far beyond baseball. He inspired generations of fans across cultures and continents, changed what was possible for international players, and became a deeply personal figure in the lives of millions who watched him play. The question wasn't how to honor him, it was who should do it.
The answer was the fans.
THE IDEA
Dear Ichiro invited fans from around the world to share letters, voicemails, photos, and videos about what Ichiro meant to them. Beginning in June and continuing through his Hall of Fame induction and number retirement, we created multiple ways for fans to participate, including social and digital prompts, Mariners.com, a dedicated voicemail line, and mailed letters sent directly to T-Mobile Park.
The response was overwhelming. Hundreds of submissions arrived from around the world, creating a living archive of Ichiro's legacy told entirely through the voices of the people whose lives he impacted.
THE EXECUTION
Rather than producing a traditional highlight reel, we built the tribute around real fan stories. Hundreds of letters and photographs formed the physical backdrop of the piece, while fan voicemails became the narration. As those voices shared personal memories, projections of Ichiro's career played across the handwritten letters and photographs, visually connecting his accomplishments with the people he inspired.
The tribute video debuted across Mariners digital channels before serving as the opening piece for Ichiro's number retirement ceremony at T-Mobile Park. Individual letters, photos, and fan stories were also featured across social media throughout the campaign, extending the tribute well beyond a single night and allowing fans to see themselves reflected in one of the most meaningful moments in club history.
THE RECOGNITION
Dear Ichiro earned a 2025 Northwest Regional Emmy Award in the Sports/One Time Special category and was nominated for Best Life or Legacy Tribute at the Hashtag Sports Awards.
WHY IT WORKED
The campaign succeeded because it gave fans ownership of the story. Instead of asking them to watch a tribute, we invited them to help create it.
By making participation simple and meaningful, the campaign generated deeper emotional connection and a tribute that felt personal instead of produced. Dear Ichiro became more than a celebration of one player's career. It became a reminder that the strongest stories are often told by the people whose lives they change.
